Healthy Monday

What is “Healthy Monday”?
The Monday Campaigns are a national movement backed by leading public health schools that dedicates the first day of every week to health. Every Monday, individuals and organizations join together to commit to healthy behaviors that help end chronic preventable diseases. Syracuse University is an avid supporter of this program and offers a variety of events every Monday encouraging students and faculty to start their week off on a healthy note.

Why Monday?
It’s the January of the week, the perfect time for a fresh start. People are more likely to begin exercising, start a diet or quit smoking on Monday than any other day. It’s a call to action built into every calendar – offering 52 chances a year to live a longer, healthier life!

How I brought Healthy Mondays to SUF…
After only a few days in Florence, I felt an absence of health programs at my school. Being an enthusiast of the Healthy Monday program at Syracuse, I knew that it would be the perfect program to bring health awareness to campus and offer students an outlet to exercise. So I took the initiative to write a proposal, send it in to the SUF administration, and make moves to bring Healthy Mondays to Florence.

I was overjoyed when my proposal was accepted with enthusiasm from the faculty! Ever since then I have been working with the staff to organize the program which officially launched, February 6. I must say I am very appreciative of the enthusiasm and support of the faculty as they have worked just as hard as I have to make this program a reality.

Although Healthy Mondays at Syracuse encompass a vast variety of programs, since our campus in Florence is small, I chose to bring three main facets of the program to Florence. Every Monday the program will furnish free fruit for students, a nutritional newsletter, and a free exercise class ranging from Pilates, Zumba and aerobics!

We hope the Healthy Monday program will not be a temporary endeavor, solely here while I am here to manage it this semester, but rather stay at SUF for the long term. It all is very exciting!
